Brittany's used to be known as Brittany Spaniels, but The American Kennel Club (AKC) officially dropped the word Spaniel from the Brittany's name in 1982 because the breed is more similar to pointing breeds than traditional spaniels. Spaniels are typically flushing dogs, meaning they locate game and flush it out for hunters. However, Brittanys are pointers—they locate game and freeze, signaling the hunter to flush the bird. Since their hunting style aligns more with pointing breeds, the AKC decided that calling them "Brittany Spaniels" was misleading and officially renamed them Brittanys. However, some people still use the old name out of habit!
